Optical Lens Barrel and Cam Guide Sleeve Assembly

Optical lens systems need ultra-precise axial guidance, non-binding dynamic sleeve movement, and absolute concentricity across multiple optical element holders. Spiral guide slots, deep internal bores, and thin-walled nested cylinders present challenges that standard 3-axis equipment cannot meet efficiently.

The Machining Challenge

Cam grooves, inner helicoil threads, and mounting flanges must all share the same optical axis. Any runout or tilt distorts the light path. Dynamic sleeves must slide smoothly without binding, so internal surfaces need a fine finish and the right surface treatment.

How KGL Machines Optical Housings

• Simultaneous 5-axis spiral milling. Rotary and linear axes cut continuous 3D cam grooves along the cylindrical body, giving stepless tracking for internal lens cell movement during zoom or focus.
• 3+2 axis precision indexing. Drilling, tapping, and counterboring of locating pin holes, mounting threads, and retaining flanges happen at exact radial positions relative to the central optical axis.
• One-setup concentricity. Outer reference diameters, inner optical seating bores, thread pitches, and cam slots are machined in one fixture clamping, sharing a coordinate origin.
• Surface finish. Continuous tool orientation control reduces vibration, yielding smooth guide tracks for low-friction sleeve movement.
