Titanium Grade Comparison: Gr2 vs Gr5 vs Gr23 vs Gr7

Typical minimum properties for the titanium grades we machine, per ASTM B265 plate and B348 bar designations.

How to read this: Gr5 nearly triples Gr2's yield strength but machines slower and needs tighter process control. Gr23 trades a little strength for ductility where fracture toughness matters. Gr2 and Gr7 keep full corrosion performance and weld easily.

Titanium Grade FAQ

Gr2 or Gr5 for a corrosion-critical housing?

Gr2 keeps full corrosion performance and machines easier; Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) carries roughly triple the yield strength. For pure corrosion service Gr2 wins; the moment the part carries structure loads, Gr5.

What does Gr23 ELI change versus Gr5?

Gr23 ELI lowers the oxygen and iron limits, which raises fracture toughness and ductility. It is the standard callout for surgical and implant-adjacent work; for industrial parts Gr5 is the economical choice.

How do you hold +/-0.01 mm on titanium?

Rigid setups, low surface speed with high feed, flood coolant concentrated on the cut zone, and finish passes left after the part has cooled. Datum features are verified on Hexagon or Zeiss CMMs.
